The Death Penalty has a long history, that started virtually with the human existence. Sacrifice humans to appease the heathenish gods, to ask for a large crop or protection against disease stood at the beginning. The legal death penalty was motivated mainly by revenge and to deter crimes.

The death penalty has also a long tradition in the US and today 38 US States have it in their laws. The death penalty and federal law makes it possible to speak death sentences even in states without the death penalty. Also military law contains the death penalty.

Execution Methods

Most states in the US execute offenders by lethal injection. Only one state (Nebraska) executes solely by electrocution. Some states give the condemned a choice between lethal injection and an other execution method.
