This was his Pen friend request:

Dear friends,

Greetings from Texas death row. I am a 41 year old African American, born March 04, 1963.

I was wrongfully convicted and put on death row for a crime of passion.

I am looking for a friend who can understand what it’s like to really love someone, or who is just a good listener. Who maybe able to help with some of the pressure of this 24 hour hell full of isolation and deprivation. It is no cakewalk here. It is hard just trying to keep ones hopes and spirits alive in here.

So I need someone who maybe able to bring a ray of sunshine to this most dreariest of places. It’s hard just trying to drag yourself out of bed in the morning and smile in a place where feelings don’t exist. Where negativity is the dish of the day. Where you become physically sick just being here. Where the only thing you receive is beratement instead of encouragement. Where it’s hard just trying to hold a decent conversation and stay sane.

And that old clichés that goes “only the strong survives” is the perfect motto for a place like this “hell”.

I will answer all letters.

Thank you and keep the struggle alive…
